Top 10 Books to Fall in Love with Reading Again: Discover New Worlds, Characters, and Stories

by Sarah Smith on July 17

There is no better feeling than reading a book that immerses your mind and soul completely. You find yourself falling in love with characters, feeling their heartbreak or joy, and as you reach the last page of the last chapter, you feel a sense of accomplishment. If you’re anything like me, you enjoy placing that book on your bookshelf like a trophy, feeling a sense of pride as you add a new color to your kaleidoscope of novels.

But then, you give in to the hype of that one romance book that is soon to become a movie. Next thing you know, you’re reading the latest TikTok book trend, and as you feared, you hate it.

There’s a strong disconnect between you and the pages. The author isn't making sense, the characters are dull and boring, and the hobby that once brought you comfort has now become a chore.

Then it hits you.

You’re officially in a book slump.

Don’t worry, it happens. I like to explain reading like I explain art or home decor to someone with a different style: not every book is everyone's taste, and that doesn't make it a bad story. It just means it isn't right for you, and that’s okay.

There have been many books I’ve tried to read to get my spark back, and some missed the mark for me, no matter how many TikToks I watched or people who swore I would "just LOVE it."

They just weren’t for me.

But then there were the ones that not only got me out of my slump but made me excited to read every single day. Those are the ones we’re focusing on today—the good ones. These ten books are ones I recommend to everyone, including my friends, who feel like they are in a total reading slump.

Take my recommendations with the knowledge that while these worked for me, they may not be your taste, and that’s okay.

Try them out; they just might do the trick.

#1 A Court of Thorns and Roses

by Sarah J Maas

Big shocker that this made the list, right? Especially since it seems like everyone and their mother is reading this series. But let me tell you, it’s popular for a reason.

This entire series is seriously top-notch. While the second book in the series, A Court of Mist and Fury, is the best, you need to read them in order. This book draws you in and sets up the world and characters incredibly well.

If you’re thinking, “Ew, no, I hate fantasy books. I’m not a weirdo!” Firstly, grow up. Secondly, this book and series is not in-your-face fantasy like Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings. It’s more subtle. The characters speak in slang that mirrors our everyday language, making it very approachable.

I won’t spoil anything, but please give it a shot. It will have your jaw on the ground (for many reasons) and will not only get you out of your slump but make you addicted to reading more.

#2 The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Similar to ACOTAR, this book deserves the hype. Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of the best authors of our time. Quote me on that. Her work is perfectly crafted, and her characters connect with you deeply.

In the book, Evelyn Hugo explains her story in a way that makes you understand her on an emotionally intimate level. This book is one I flew through in two days. It’s quick, beautiful, and will absolutely make you fall in love with reading again.

Her other book, Daisy Jones and The Six, is also amazing, but that’s for later.

Hint hint.

#3 The Song of Achilles

by Madeline Miller

This is for all the girlies who loved The Lightning Thief growing up and had an obsession with Greek mythology.

Song of Achilles is a book everyone says will destroy you, and they are right.

This book broke my heart more than any breakup. It’s pretty historically accurate, so history buffs can enjoy it without rolling their eyes at inaccuracies. It’s sad but beautiful. This book got me back into reading after college and reminded me that emotional stories aren’t just for the screen.

Pro tip: grab those Kleenex!

#4 Normal People

by Sally Rooney

Normal People is an emotional rollercoaster that delves deep into the complexities of relationships.

It’s beautifully written and incredibly relatable. Rooney’s writing style is unique, and her characters are flawed yet endearing. This book will remind you of the power of simple, honest storytelling.

#5 Giving Me Butterflies

by Katy Michele

Amazing books don’t always need millions of reviews.

Giving Me Butterflies is a must-read. It touches on heavy topics with grace and empathy, highlighting that while there are deep issues in society, there is still love and light. It’s a story of romance and hope.

As the first book of Katy Michels Lenny Bartender series, this story is approachable, heartbreaking in many forms, yet will leave you reminded that even the greatest tragedy can provide a glimpse of happiness.

Dare I say, a silver lining.

#6 Daisy Jones and The Six

by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Yes, Taylor Jenkins Reid makes the list again!

Daisy Jones and The Six is a unique, captivating story about a fictional rock band in the 70s. The book is written as an oral history, making it feel like a documentary. It’s an engrossing, fast-paced read that will keep you hooked from start to finish.

Classic, this book was also adapted for the big screen but the book is very different from the show, and in my opinion, it's far better. If you enjoyed the Amazon series, you definitely need to give this a shot. I've never read anything quite like it, and after finishing my second Taylor Jenkins Reid book, I can confidently say she is my favorite author right now.

#7 Once In a Blue Moon Lodge

by Lorna Landvik

Once In a Blue Moon Lodge is a heartwarming, feel-good read. It’s a story about family, friendship, and finding your way home.

This story focuses on a Norwegian-American family living in Minnesota (which basically describes my family in the Twin Cities, so I can totally relate). Set in the same world as other Landvik books like Patty Jane’s House of Curl, it follows the same characters and family, delving deeper into Nora’s story and personal growth.

This book screams comfort and coziness. It's an easy read, incredibly funny, and guaranteed to make you smile or giggle.

#8 The Great Gatsby

by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Alright, hold your judgment. I know this is “basic,” but The Great Gatsby is my all-time favorite.

It’s arguably the best novel ever written in American history. The story is relatable and perfectly explains what most people go through as we age and hold on to dreams from our youth. It’s poetic and powerful.

There’s no shame in rereading your favorite book, and honestly this has always helped me get out of a reading slump.

Chef’s kiss. 10/10.

#9 People We Meet On Vacation

by Emily Henry

This book is the equivalent of a Bravo show—light-hearted, easy to digest, and romantic. It’s a beach read, effortless and satisfying. It’s perfect for anyone burnt out from work or school and looking for some light-hearted escapism.

Is it the most captivating novel ever? No.

But does every piece of literature need to be life-changing?

Absolutely not. Sometimes, you just need some guilty pleasure and fun.

#10 The Duke and I (Bridgerton Book 1)

by Julia Quinn

You know the saying, “The book is better than the movie”? Well, it also goes for TV shows too because The Duke and I is way better than the Bridgerton show. It’s a classic romantic story that everyone can fall in love with.

Sometimes sticking to a story you know you’ll love is a great way to get out of a reading slump.

Plus, these books offer more details and subplots that the show doesn’t even touch on.

Get Out of That Slump and Practice Some Hygge!

Reading slumps don’t last forever. You will find an author who speaks your language and characters you will fall in love with. My challenge to you is to try new genres, authors, and storylines. Don’t write off different genres like sci-fi because you think they lack emotional depth. You might find an unexpected novel you love.

Not interested in trying a new genre? Support new authors within your favorite genre. Don’t wait for TikTok to tell you what to read, go find a newly released book from a new or independent author.

We always say support local businesses or artists; the same goes for authors!

Would this be a Scandi Sconnie post without mentioning hygge? Absolutely not. Reading is a great form of comfort and relaxation and is one of my key pillars of hygge all year round. If you’re looking for new ways to practice hygge, try disconnecting from devices, light a candle, and grab one of these books to read for an hour or so.

That right there is not only you practicing hygge but crawling out of that reading slump.
